What is IELTS?
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
It is for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication.
There are 2 IELTS test module which candidates can choose either one of them which is as follows:
- The Academic Module is recommended for candidates who need to meet English
Language requirements of universities or other educational institutions.
- The General Training Module is intended for those planning to undertake non-
academic training to gain work experience or for immigration purposes.
IELTS Characteristics
IELTS incorporates the following features:
- A variety of accents and writing styles are presented in text materials in order to
minimize linguistic bias.
- IELTS tests the ability to listen, read, write and speak in English.
- Band scores are used for each language sub-skill (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking)
The Band Scale ranges from 1 (“Non User”) to 9 (“Expert User”)
Band Scale
IELTS is scored on a nine band scale. Each Band corresponds to different English competence. The Band Scores are in either whole or half Bands. The nine bands are described as such:
9 - Expert User
Has fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.
8 - Very Good User
Has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.
7 - Good User
Has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.
6 - Competent User
Competent user.
5 - Modest User
Has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field.
4 - Limited User
Basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Has frequent problems in use of complex language.
3 - Extremely Limited User
Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. Frequent breakdowns in communication occur.
2- Intermittent User
No real communication is possible except for the most basic information using isolated words or short formulae in familiar situations and to meet immediate needs. Has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.
1 - Non User
Essentially has no ability to use the language beyond possibly a few isolated words.

No assessable information provided. Candidate may have failed to sit for the test.
Australian Institute of Training & Education (AITE) - IELTS Preparation Centre
AITE prepare participants for IELTS test, whether it is for Academic Module or General Training Module.

Duration
Participants may choose to study 14 hours per week on either 4, 8 or 12 weeks duration. A full one week intensive course is also available.
Please be aware that the amount of study you require in order to reach your goal depends on many factors including your current level, the band score you are aiming for and how much time you regularly devote to language study each week. Eight weeks is generally recommended as a minimum.

Course structure
The course will focus heavily on the acquisition of the following skills:
Comprehension and identification of main ideas, information of conversations
and monologues relating to social themes and training needs, presented by speakers of a broad variety of English.
Comprehension of the main information and ideas contained in reading passages of a general, non specific nature taken from books and magazines, including texts which contain diagrams, graphs or illustrations and texts which present logical
arguments.
Students will learn effective communication while providing personal information
and participating in abstract discussion related to a given topic. In addition, they
will learn to express and justify preferences and opinions appropriate to topics.
Students will learn to describe processes, objects and events, how things work
and analyze tables and diagrams. Essays, report-writing and research assignments
will be expected of students and they will be given feedback, correction and
assistance to ensure that they are confident to write. Special attention will be
given to Grammar.
- Study Skills – For Academic Module Only
The skills taught will include a critical, analytical and self reliant approach to study and analyzing information across different sources. Most importantly, students will learn to give an oral presentation using visual aids effectively. Group
discussion and problem solving are integral components of this course.
IELTS Test Centre
Upon completion of IELTS preparation course, participants sit for IELTS test at approved IELTS test centres.
IELTS test fee charged by most IELTS test centres is less than $500.
