40540SA CERTIFICATE IV IN TESOL
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Do you want to teach English to speakers of other languages in Australia or overseas? Our Certificate IV in TESOL
is specifically designed to give you the practical skills to teach English in Australia or internationally. You will learn
the latest teaching strategies and methodology in practical classes for developing the English language proficiency
of a wide range of second language learners.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You may enrol in 40540SA Certificate in TESOL if you have the following:
• a Year 12 or other equivalent education qualification
and for applicants from a non-English speaking background
• IELTS 6.5 with no score under 6 / ISLPR two skills at 3 and two at 3+ (or equivalent) as a minimum.
All applicants will be interviewed. The aim of the interview is to inform applicants about the course and to assess
both the suitability of the applicant for the course and the suitability of the course for their career plans.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Upon successful completion of the program you will have the necessary teaching and linguistics skills to teach
English competently and confidently in the following situations:
• to groups of visiting students on short term study tours
• to small groups of migrants in a supervised and limited capacity for the development of general English skills
• in Australian ELICOS schools if you have additional qualifications
• to overseas students in Australia or English students in your home country on an individual tuition or small
group tutorial basis
• overseas teaching conversational English on a working holiday program or assistant language teacher program
• mid to long term in kindergartens, private and public schools, colleges, universities, companies and English
language schools overseas, though a Bachelor degree is often required to obtain a work visa
PROGRAM DURATION
Flexible
Program length: Six months full-time (one semesters) - 265 hours – to complete online units, teaching practicum
and assessments
Delivery modes: Online, face-to-face, and teaching practicum
The need to fulfil a minimum of 6 hours supervised and assessed teaching practice by each
student will not be affected by online delivery of some units, as students will undertake this
component of the course in face-to-face mode.
PROGRAM ARTICULATION
Graduates of the 40540SA Certificate in TESOL will be able to use their qualification to seek work in TESOL
throughout the world and later undertake higher levels of study. After 3 years post-qualification full-time TESOL
teaching experience students can upgrade to 39200QLD Vocational Graduate Certificate in TESOL or undertake
39201QLD Vocational Graduate Diploma of TESOL.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Individuals may receive credit for their knowledge and skills through recognition of prior learning (RPL) upon
completion of the RPL process. The process will involve an initial meeting with an assessor to discuss your needs.
Fees may be applicable for this service. You will then be required to gather your evidence, enrol into the class/es
and submit your application for assessment.
Assessment may include skills and achievements from:
•
Work experience (paid and unpaid)
•
Life experience (for example leisure pursuits or voluntary work)
•
adult education classes)
In order to grant RPL, an assessor must be confident that candidates are currently competent. Evidence used for
assessment may take a variety of forms and could include certification, references from past employers, work
samples, testimonials from clients, and challenge testing.
